Walpole is a town 432km SSE of Perth and 66km west of Denmark. Walpole lies at the northern edge of the Walpole Inlet and is one of the few towns on the path of the Bibbulmun Track. View a Walpole WA Map to get your bearings.
Between Walpole and Denmark lies the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk & The Ancient Empires Walk through the ancient tingle trees.
The Walpole Wilderness Area is an ancient forest with ancient Karri and Giant Tingle stretching up and up! These trees are amazingly graceful as they soar into the sky stretching endlessly in all directions.
Visit the National Parks (below) and explore the beautiful Southern Forests of the Walpole Wilderness Area.
Mount Frankland National Park is close to walpole and can be accessed only from the town or from the South West Highway to the west. Take a stroll to the top or
Walpole-Nornalup National Park (now part of the Walpole Wilderness Area and the Great South West Edge) stretches north and west and Walpole lies at the south east edge.
Visit Mandalay Beach in D'entrecasteaux National Park on the western edge of the forests.
The town of Walpole is set on the north side of the Walpole Inlet amidst the Walpole-Nornalup National Park.
The giant Tingle forest is spectacularly represented by the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk and the Ancient Empire.
The Walpole and Nornalup Inlet also offer the unique opportunity to see bird life and canoeing and kayaking is a popular activity for visitors and locals alike.
The Walpole-Nornalup National Park covers most of the wild and beautiful Walpole coastline. The ancient forests begin at Denmark and grow older as you drive west towards the Valley of the Giants. From there the national park continues west, incorporating the entire southern coast.
Further west in the southern tip of D'Entrecasteaux National Park we recommend a visit to Mandalay Beach perhaps catching a glimpses of the shipwreck Mandalay from the viewing platforms or boardwalk or descend and walk on the beautiful white, clean sand.
If you're coming to Walpole we recommend visiting the grandmother tingle tree at the Giant Tingle Tree north of Walpole, take a glimpse at Circular Pool, and visit Fernhook Falls waterfalls in Mount Frankland National Park. While you are there, consider a walk to the summit of Mount Frankland.
We visit Mount Frankland National Park once or twice a year. The magnificent view from the peak of Mt Frankland is magnificent, and the climb to the summit a very grounding experience. We have made the ascent with a two year old and a 70 year old and both made it to the top without assistance (but a few short rests were nice). If you are visiting the Rainbow Coast (also called the Walpole Wilderness Area and the Great South West Edge) we recommend a visit to Mt Frankland if you have the time.
Set way out in the wilderness, Mount Frankland is only accessible from the south (Walpole) or the west (South Western Hwy) Mt Frankland is a great way to get out amongst the trees and see the entire Wilderness Area laid before you. Great uninterrupted views.
Mandalay Beach in D'entrecasteaux National Park is really amazing. The boardwalk hugging the cliffside and the views south to the islands and channells of the south western edge of Australia... truly beautiful. A good day trip is to visit Mount Frankland in the morning and on your way home stop at Mandalay Beach for a breath of fresh sea breeze. You may be lucky enough to see the masts of the Mandalay... every ten years or so the shipwreck appears from beneath the sand. Wow.
The Channels is located just east of Walpole and is a pleasant circular drive out onto the Knoll peninsula which divides the Nornaulp and Walpole Inlets. Gorgeous drive beneath the trees, near the water.
